My roommates and I have recently gotten entrenched in the 100% Free-to-Play MMORPG Runes of Magic. To the fresh eye, it is most definitely a World of Warcraft clone. However, among many smaller differences (compared to the following), there are two important details about this game that make it pleasantly deviate from WoW.
First: It’s FREE!
Second: It’s FUN!
I know I know. WoW has.. god.. too many players. I have no clue how many but I know it’s a lot. That means it can’t be all baaad, right?

I DID play WoW for quite a while and I’m not unfamiliar with it. While it had its entertaining moments and it was ‘pretty’, I was overall unhappy with the gameplay. That was before factoring in that I was actually paying to be disappointed – just to be cool with all the other WoW players lol. Combine those and you’ve a quick-mix recipe for a waste of money.
I do enjoy the MMORPG scene, just not most of the games. I played Ultima Online for probably close to a decade and have yet to find a game that’s held my interest so well (that’s right, I just said UO is more fun than WoW, EQ, EQ2, GW, etc etc) – until now. Runes of Magic is FUN for me and I don’t have to feel a sense of urgency about it because every minute outside of gameplay is not wasting my money.
It does, of course, have options to throw real money into the game in exchange for ingame stuff, but it’s all very balanced and you are not held back at all by never paying any real money. I’ve not paid a dime into the game so far, though I might buy some diamonds later =D. There’s no benefit you can buy with cash, that you can’t get ingame via fair means.
This is NOT a paid advertisement. I’m still pretty new to the game myself but I thought I would share this with you. In these financially tough times, who wants to waste money on mediocre entertainment? Even if this game sucks to you, you’re not out any money =D. If you give it a chance though, I think you will be pleasantly entertained. Development also continues constantly on the game, so it’s always getting better =).
